Apple launched two very different MacBook Pros in the same week of October 2026. On October 27 it refreshed the entry 14-inch MacBook Pro with the new M6 chip. A day later it unveiled the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display, Apple’s first Mac with a touchscreen, an OLED panel and a Dynamic Island. Both ship on November 6, and the price gap between them is $900.
This guide explains what each new MacBook Pro offers, how they compare with the M5 models they join, and which one makes sense for students, creators and professionals.
The 2026 MacBook Pro Lineup at a Glance
| Model | Chip | Display | Starting price |
|---|---|---|---|
| MacBook Pro 14-inch (M6) | M6 | Mini-LED Liquid Retina XDR | $1,999 |
| MacBook Pro 14-inch PROLED XDR | M5 Pro or M5 Max | 14.2-inch tandem OLED touchscreen | $2,899 |
| MacBook Pro 16-inch PROLED XDR | M5 Pro or M5 Max | 16.3-inch tandem OLED touchscreen | $3,399 |
Apple continues to sell the existing mini-LED MacBook Pro models alongside the new machines, so check the display type carefully when you order.
MacBook Pro 14-inch with M6: What Changed
The M6 model is a chip and connectivity update. The design, mini-LED display, keyboard and ports stay the same as the M5 version. The changes are:
- CPU: 12 cores (2 super cores, 4 performance, 6 efficiency), up from 10 on the M5.
- GPU: 12 cores, up from 10. Apple claims up to 30% faster graphics and up to 25% faster AI workloads than M5.
- Neural Engine: doubled to a dual 16-core design, 32 cores in total.
- Memory bandwidth: up from 153GB/s to 170GB/s on 24GB and 32GB configurations.
- Storage: starts at 1TB.
- Wireless: Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 through Apple’s N1 chip.
- External displays: two 4K displays at up to 165Hz.
For buyers who want a Pro screen and speakers without paying for M5 Pro, the M6 model is now the default recommendation. If you already own an M4 or M5 MacBook Pro, the gains are not large enough to justify upgrading.
MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR: Apple’s First Touchscreen Mac
The PROLED XDR models are the bigger story. They use a tandem OLED panel with up to 2,000 nits peak brightness for both SDR and HDR content, a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio, ProMotion from 10Hz to 120Hz, and an optional nano-texture finish. The touch sensor is built into the panel itself. The notch is replaced by a Dynamic Island that shows Live Activities and gives quick access to Spotlight and Siri.
- Chips: M5 Pro or M5 Max, with up to 128GB of unified memory and up to 16TB of storage.
- Ports: three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, SDXC card slot, MagSafe and a headphone jack. Supports up to four external displays.
- Design: up to 1 mm thinner, 3 pounds for the 14-inch and 4 pounds for the 16-inch, with a new hinge, redesigned cooling and a glowing rear Apple logo.
- Audio: six-speaker system with up to 50% deeper bass.
- Charging: 50% in about 30 minutes with fast charging.
Note that these models do not use the new M6 family. Apple paired its first OLED Mac with the M5 Pro and M5 Max, so the entry M6 model actually has a newer-generation chip, though far fewer cores.
Which New MacBook Pro Should You Buy?
Choose the M6 MacBook Pro if:
- You want a Pro display, better speakers and more ports than a MacBook Air.
- Your work is coding, office apps, photo editing or light video editing.
- You want the best value in the Pro lineup at $1,999 with 1TB of storage.
Choose the PROLED XDR MacBook Pro if:
- You grade HDR video or edit photos and benefit from OLED contrast and 2,000-nit brightness.
- You need M5 Pro or M5 Max performance, lots of memory, or up to four external displays.
- You want touch input on a Mac for drawing, annotation or presentations.

Should You Wait for M7?
Reports from Bloomberg suggest a redesigned MacBook Pro with M7 chips could arrive in the first half of 2027. If your current laptop still works well and you want M-series Pro or Max chips on the newest generation, waiting is reasonable. If you need a machine now, both November 2026 models are solid buys, and the PROLED XDR display is the biggest leap in MacBook Pro screens in years.
